Grab a drink and join us at 5.30pm on Wednesday 30 September to network with your peers and hear from Maria Caruana Galizia, Producer and Managing Director of Candle & Bell, on how she started her business and the lessons she learned.

Maria is a filmmaker and producer. She runs a company called Candle & Bell, which was named one of the Top 50 creative companies in England by Creative England.

Maria produces videos for businesses and her clients include Barclays, Northumbria University, Northumberland County Council, North East Culture Partnership and many more. She has produced over 11 short films, including the Royal Television Society Award NE award-winning “They Live in Forests”, the BAFTA long-listed “Mordechai” and BIFA Long listed “A Six and Two Threes”.

Maria is an alumnus of the Edinburgh Film Festival Talent Lab and Creative Producer Initiative and mentors new filmmakers for BAFTA.

Maria will talk about how she started her business with a very small startup budget, opting for a bootstrapping approach to starting a business rather than huge startup capital. Her experience of building a business using this approach was also a lesson in resilience and determination.

She will share the lessons she has learnt from her missteps and how you can avoid these happening to you and your business. This event is open to all businesses across the UK. Register your free place today.

Durham Ambitious Business Start-Ups (DABS) is an ERDF-funded programme that helps high-quality startups in County Durham start trading and offers premium quality support during your critical first 12 months in business.

Different from many other business accelerators, the DABS programme offers two unique support packages. One for those who have a great idea and have not yet started their business, and another for those new entrepreneurs at the start of their exciting journey. Tailored support that allows DABS to maximise the success of your business.

Delivered by UMi on behalf of Business Durham, the DABS programme aims to foster a startup environment throughout County Durham to help new and prospective business owners support and learn from each other.
