I’ve always been involved in the disability sector of healthcare, and I’ve been working in that for about 20, almost 30 years. It has always been an ambition of mine to have my own business, because it gives me a lot more freedom to do the things I want to do as well.

In the past, I’ve seen Jamie win medals for club and country as a wheelchair basketball player and coach. He narrowly missed qualifying for the GB fencing team at the 2012 Paralympics. He’s completed the London Marathon and, in 2018, he was one of 98 wheelchair users to break the Guinness World Record for pulling the heaviest aircraft 100 metres.

We’re here for a great reason: to support the charity called Arability. It’s a charity that supports disabled people who want to learn to fly, putting them behind the controls of an aircraft. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why we’re here, and we’re looking forward to smashing that record today.

Jamie is now busy helping people get back to work or just fend for themselves after injury or illness. He launched his business at the start of 2024 with the invaluable help of his solutions advisor.

“I spoke to Tracy, who helped me to work out all the background information about setting up the business—things like the legal aspects, tax aspects, and all the other in-between bits such as marketing, sales, and networking. I hadn’t even thought about those things.”

It’s just a dream of mine to have my own business. It is scary at first, obviously, but it’s blossomed from what I thought was going to be a sideline business into something I’m now running full time.

I was reading a book the other day and it said that you never know how good you’re going to be, or how successful you’re going to be, until you try. That’s my best advice: just go for it and try.
