Durham High was challenged to solve a pressing issue facing High Streets across the UK: how to reimagine them for today’s communities. Through our research, we discovered that people are craving late-night opportunities, better accessibility — like parking — and, most importantly, meaningful ways to connect with others after work or school. That’s why we created The Box: a unique, ever-evolving venue where communities come together through creativity, culture, and connection. It’s a mobile, flexible space that can expand to other cities — supporting small businesses and locals, offering experiences that reflect the diversity and interests of the people we serve. From handcraft markets and creative workshops to book signings and local music nights, The Box adapts to the people inside it. Some events are completely free to attend, while others (like live performances or guest speakers) may have a small fee to help cover running costs — keeping things accessible while ensuring quality. We’re starting small — with funding from grants, angel investors, and our own commitment — but our long-term vision is bigger. We plan to franchise or license The Box, protecting the concept while helping other towns revive their High Streets with our community-first approach. The Box is built by you. It’s a safe, inclusive space where everyone’s voice matters. We don’t just want to bring people back to the High Street — we want to give them a reason to stay. You're the future of The Box!
